Description

Boat

Thorfinn is a classic and substantial 58m long, 10m wide steel-hulled dive liveaboard designed for comfort, stability and exceptional diving expeditions in Micronesia. The vessel cruises at an efficient cruising speed around 11 knots and maximum speed at 16 knots, combines robust construction with spacious living and social areas ideal for extended stays at sea.

Thorfinn was built in Norway in 1954 as an Ice Class Whaler. In 1977 she was converted into an utility charter cruiser in Vancouver, then she was upgraded in Cairns, Australia in 1995. In 2005 and 2008 she had majors repair and replacement in Batangas, Philippines.

Adjacent to the lounge is the dining room where all meals are served with attention to variety and dietary needs. Outside, the ship’s decks offer plenty of spaces to unwind: a sun deck with loungers for soaking up the tropical views and a spa deck with a large hot tub where guests can relax after a day of diving.

Itineraries

Daily Diving Procedures

Mornings
Mornings begin with fresh coffee, hot tea and fresh morning baking at main guest lounge for early risers as a prelude to breakfast. A Full American breakfast menu is served at ship’s ‘D’ deck dining lounge by 7:00 AM. After a pre-dive lounge briefing, first dives are underway by 8:00 AM

Daily Dives
Each day begins with lounge briefings, with the first dives departing around 8:00 AM. Dive schedules are set by each group or assigned by guides, and daily dive plans with wreck sketches are available for guests every morning.

Dive sites are reached by a short (~10 min) launch ride. Crew assist with final preparations before entry, and cameras and lights are handed down prior to descending the mooring line with your guide. A brief dive plan is given before each dive.

Chuuk’s WWII wrecks and reefs are covered in vibrant corals and marine life, with warm water and visibility of 10–35 m (30–100 ft). Guides highlight each site’s best features, while experienced divers may explore independently. Wreck penetration is permitted on a buddy basis, preferably with a guide, and proper wreck procedures are strictly followed for safety.

Single-tank air divers should begin ascent with 70 bar / 1,000 psi remaining, following staged safety stops. Emergency safety cylinders are available, and Nitrox is provided for certified divers on shallower dives.

After surfacing, crew assist with gear handling. Freshwater showers, towels, and drinking water are available immediately, and equipment is rinsed and stored by staff. Snacks and refreshments are served during surface intervals between up to four daily dives and after night dives.

Surface Breaks
Wide selections of DVD films/movies are available from a central library for viewing at main lounge’s 50” LED TV, or at smaller sets in each guest room. Underwater photos/videos can be viewed at these sets also. A ship’s store/boatique offers many items of interest in books, handicrafts, postcards and T shirts. Reading libraries in various languages and topics are located in main lounge, dining room, and at ship’s office.

Spacious sun decks and lounging chairs provide tanning locations, or shade under awnings to read a book and enjoy refreshments. After dark, often brilliant night skies can be viewed by star gazers sitting out or laying back on upper deck lounge chairs. Deck towels are readied at camera table racks for use as desired.

Night Dive
After supper night dives complete a choice of 5 dives/day, and are offered every evening that conditions permit… only requiring one diver or more to enjoy vivid corals and nocturnal aqua life on many sites.

Island Visits
Visits to islands adjacent to ship moorage for views of a basic tropic lifestyle and various ruins left from a past Japanese era are freely available on request.

Departures
For late afternoon departing flights, guests complete personal packing and shipboard formalities followed by midday departing farewells for transfers back to Weno , Chuuk’s main commercial island in suitable time for airport check-ins and flight off to other worlds

Useful information

Truk Lagoon

Best time for diving
November to May is generally the best time for diving in Chuuk Lagoon, with calm seas and good visibility. The lagoon is a year-round wreck diving destination, but visibility can drop during the rainy season (June to October). Expect visibility between 15 – 30 meters, with mild currents, making it ideal for both recreational and technical divers.

About temperatures
Air: typically ranges between 27°C – 31°C year-round.
Sea: water is warm year-round, about 28°C – 30°C.

Wetsuit Recommendation
A 3 mm wetsuit is recommended for most divers. Technical divers exploring deeper wrecks may prefer a 5 mm or a shorty with a hood depending on depth and personal comfort.

Diver requirement
Suitable for intermediate to advanced divers, especially for wreck diving enthusiasts. Some wrecks are at depths exceeding 40 meters and may require technical diving experience. Nitrox is highly recommended for extended dives. You can find out more information about diving in this area here: Truk Lagoon

Embarkation / Disembarkation
Liveaboard trips usually embark and disembark from Weno Island (TKK), the main island of Chuuk State.

Visa Requirements
Travelers to Micronesia (including Chuuk) may require a visa depending on nationality. Many nationalities are eligible for 30-day visa-free entry, but it is recommended to check with the Federated States of Micronesia Immigration for the latest requirements.

Vaccinations
Routine vaccinations are recommended, including Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Money Matters
The local currency is United States Dollar (USD). ATMs are limited, so cash in small denominations is recommended for local purchases. Major credit cards may be accepted in larger hotels.

Drones
Drone use is allowed in Chuuk for photography, but regulations are limited. Please check local rules before flying.

Extending your holiday
We offer a range of hotels/resorts, land-based diving packages, and excursions that can be arranged before or after your liveaboard holiday. Just ask us if you need such service.

Martin & David, 29/06/2014

So Me and my friend David just back from Truk not long ago and we really enjoyed a lot there and we both saw the reason why we should do a Tech course. I love wreck dive, so i really enjoyed the fatastic wreck in Truck Logoon, and no wonder why people told me that here is the top one wreck diving destination in the whole world. For the divers who wants to go there, i high recommmed you buy a full covered dive insurance with you! The boat Thorfinn was a bit old style to us with stander facilities (cabin). But it was huge compare to another liveaboard, and good value for technical divers.
