Description

Boat

Purposeful, spacious and made for long passages, Adventure is a Mexican liveaboard that connects divers with two of the eastern Pacific's great marine destinations: the Sea of Cortez and the Revillagigedo Islands, widely known as Socorro. Her strong aluminium hull and twin Caterpillar engines are well suited to offshore navigation, while a cruising speed of approximately 11 knots helps maximise time at the dive sites.

The vessel was originally built in 1977 and has since been converted, upgraded and maintained for liveaboard diving. Bluewater Dive Travel currently lists her at 27.1 metres long with a 6.55-metre beam. Inside, guests have an air-conditioned saloon, a dining room and comfortable spaces for briefings, photo review or a quiet break between dives. Outside, shaded seating and broad sun decks provide room to stretch out, watch Baja's rugged coastline and scan the horizon for dolphins, whales or mobula rays.

Adventure is designed around active days in the water. The main deck brings the dive benches, tank stations and equipment area together near a wide water-access platform. Two 20-foot Zodiacs transport divers to sites that cannot be approached by the main vessel. A dedicated camera rinse tank, charging points and freshwater hoses help keep equipment organised throughout the voyage.

Meals are served in the indoor dining area and focus on fresh Mexican and international flavours. Published onboard service includes buffet-style breakfasts, plated lunches and dinners, snacks, soft drinks and options for vegetarian or vegan guests. Dietary requirements should always be submitted before travel so the crew can confirm what is possible in remote waters.

Whether the itinerary follows the island-dotted Gulf of California or crosses open ocean toward Socorro, Adventure offers the practical layout, range and relaxed social atmosphere that experienced divers expect from a Mexico liveaboard.

Cabin

Current accommodation descriptions show 8 air-conditioned cabins, including double/twin rooms and larger quad cabins. The arrangement is useful for couples, solo travellers sharing a room, families and small dive groups. Each cabin provides a place to sleep and recharge between a full schedule of dives.

Typical cabin amenities include:

  • Individually controlled air conditioning
  • Twin, double or bunk-style sleeping arrangements depending on cabin category
  • Private washbasin with hot water
  • Vanity mirror and reading lights
  • Storage for personal belongings
  • 110V electrical outlets
  • Daily housekeeping

Bathrooms are arranged as separate shared men's and women's facilities with multiple toilets, showers and sinks. This is an important distinction for travellers comparing Adventure with an ensuite-cabin liveaboard.

Published capacity figures vary by sales platform and by operating configuration. Bluewater's current page advertises up to 19 guests, while other listings describe different diver and passenger limits. Guests should therefore confirm the exact cabin plan, occupancy and bathroom arrangement for their selected departure before booking.

Diving

Adventure supports multi-day scuba expeditions with a shaded dive deck, individual setup space and fast tender access. Most full diving days schedule 3–4 dives, although the number and timing always depend on distance, sea conditions, park rules and the experience of the group. Night dives are offered on suitable Sea of Cortez routes; offshore Socorro programs generally concentrate on demanding daytime big-animal dives.

The boat carries aluminium cylinders, weights, an air compressor and Nitrox facilities. Rental equipment and training may be available when reserved in advance. Two Zodiacs, each published for up to ten divers, allow groups to enter close to the action and return directly to the dive platform.

Key diving facilities include:

  • Shaded dive deck and tank benches
  • Two 20-foot dive tenders
  • Nitrox for appropriately certified divers
  • Dedicated rinse area for underwater cameras and electronics
  • Charging station for lights and camera equipment
  • DIN adaptors and rinse hoses
  • Rental scuba equipment on advance request
  • Emergency oxygen and first-aid equipment

Sea of Cortez diving can include sea lion colonies, wrecks, rocky reefs, seamounts and mobula encounters. Socorro focuses on exposed volcanic sites visited by giant Pacific manta rays, dolphins, hammerheads, silky sharks and other pelagic species. Some locations can bring current, surge, blue-water ascents and negative entries, so relevant experience and good buoyancy control are strongly recommended.

Itineraries

Adventure operates seasonal liveaboard diving cruises in the Sea of Cortez and the Revillagigedo Archipelago. Routes, trip length and boarding port change across the calendar. The following programs are representative outlines based on published schedules, not guaranteed daily plans. The captain may reorder or replace sites for weather, currents, wildlife activity, safety or national-park requirements.

Sea of Cortez – Sample 7-Day Diving Adventure

The Gulf of California combines desert islands with remarkably productive water. On a longer route, divers can move from shallow sea lion playgrounds to offshore seamounts, historic wrecks and a night dive among mobula rays. La Paz is the usual gateway for this style of itinerary.

Day 1 – Embarkation and check dive
Meet the crew, complete dive paperwork and join the safety and vessel orientation. After cabins are assigned, Adventure leaves harbour and, conditions permitting, the guides run a straightforward check dive.

Day 2 – Sea lions and island reefs
Explore areas such as Corralito, Los Islotes and Isla San Francisquito. Los Islotes is known for a large sea lion colony, with curious younger animals often approaching calm, respectful divers.

Day 3 – Las Ánimas and mobula night dive
Three daytime dives may cover walls, rocky points and sandy habitat where moray eels, rays and octopuses hide. When conditions align, the day finishes with a memorable night dive as mobulas sweep through the illuminated water.

Day 4 – El Bajo seamounts
Descend over blue-water pinnacles that can attract schooling hammerheads, whale sharks and marlin. A later dive or night dive may return to the sheltered environment of Los Islotes.

Day 5 – Reefs and wrecks
The plan may combine another sea lion dive with the Fang Ming wreck, Lapas 03 or other nearby sites. Baja's wrecks have become artificial reefs used by schooling fish, morays, octopuses and resting turtles.

Day 6 – Wreck circuit and Punta Lobos
Possible sites include the Cañonero C-59, the Salvatierra ferry, Swanee Reef and Punta Lobos. During the appropriate season, the waters around Punta Lobos can produce extraordinary mobula gatherings.

Day 7 – Final dives and marine safari
One or two morning dives may be planned at La Reina before an open-water wildlife search near Isla Cerralvo. The schedule then turns toward port while respecting safe no-fly intervals.

Revillagigedo Islands (Socorro) – Sample 9-Day Expedition

Located far south-west of Cabo San Lucas, the Revillagigedo Islands are an oceanic diving destination reached only by a substantial crossing. San Benedicto, Roca Partida and Socorro Island deliver the archipelago's signature mix of giant mantas, dolphins, sharks and immense schools of fish. A published nine-day program includes seven diving days and approximately 22–23 tanks.

Day 1 – Cabo San Lucas departure
Board at the marina, complete the safety briefing and settle in before Adventure begins the open-ocean crossing toward San Benedicto.

Day 2 – First dives at San Benedicto
Arrive around midday and make two or three introductory dives at sites such as Fondeadero and El Cañón. These slopes and cleaning areas offer the first chance of sharks, rays and pelagic fish.

Day 3 – The Boiler
Spend a full day around San Benedicto's famous offshore pinnacle. Up to four dives may be scheduled at The Boiler, a celebrated cleaning station for giant Pacific mantas and a frequent dolphin encounter site.

Day 4 – San Benedicto variety
Dive El Cañón, Lava Flow and Tres Hermanos as conditions allow, then navigate overnight or late in the day toward isolated Roca Partida.

Day 5 – Roca Partida
Make three or four dives around this exposed rock rising from deep Pacific water. Its walls and ledges can hold whitetip reef sharks, while tuna, jacks, hammerheads and other pelagics patrol the blue.

Day 6 – Socorro Island
Visit sites such as Roca O'Neal and Punta Tosca for three dives. The vessel also completes the required inspection with the Mexican naval authorities.

Day 7 – Cabo Pearce
A full diving day at this long volcanic finger gives repeated opportunities for manta, dolphin and shark encounters. The vessel later returns toward San Benedicto.

Day 8 – Final San Benedicto dives
Complete two morning dives, often at El Cañón, before beginning the long passage back to Cabo San Lucas around midday.

Day 9 – Return to Cabo
Arrive in Cabo San Lucas later in the day and disembark after the crew has secured the vessel.

Seasonal Marine Life

The experience changes throughout the year. In the Sea of Cortez, sea lion activity is especially engaging when young animals are in the water, while mobula aggregations are most associated with the warmer months. Whale sharks, humpback whales and grey whales are seasonal visitors rather than guaranteed sightings.

Socorro's primary attractions are giant Pacific mantas, bottlenose dolphins and multiple shark species, including scalloped hammerheads, silky sharks, Galápagos sharks, oceanic whitetips and whitetip reef sharks. Whale sharks and humpbacks appear seasonally. These are wild encounters in open ocean, and no specific animal can be promised on any departure.

Important Planning Notes

  • Exact routes and dive counts are weather- and permit-dependent.
  • Socorro diving is generally best suited to confident, experienced divers.
  • Guests should verify required certification level, minimum logged dives and Nitrox rules for their departure.
  • Cabin inventory and maximum capacity differ across published listings; confirm the exact configuration in writing.
  • Allow an appropriate surface interval before flying, following the operator's final-dive schedule and current dive-safety guidance.
